Frequently Asked Questions about the
Airport Way Preventive Maintenance- Stage 2 project

Q: When will construction begin?

A: Stage 2: Peger Road to Hoselton Road: June 2015

Q: Will the road look any different after the project is complete?

A: The road corridor will look the same, however, there will be improvements to the features we’ve identified in our project scope.

This project is being funded with federal Preventive Maintenance (PM) funds. PM projects focus on improving the functional condition of the roadway and reducing maintenance costs, which means facility enhancements such as landscaping or adding decorative fence are not eligible for funding for this type of project. The existing grass median and lilac trees will not be changed by this project.

Q: Several years ago, DOT had public meetings about different options for major reconstruction on Airport Way. What is that status of that?

A: The Airport Way Improvements Project was a Reconnaissance Study conducted between 2004 and 2006 and is now complete. The study evaluated the corridor and produced conceptual-level functional layouts that would optimize traffic operations, with particular focus on balancing the competing demands of local access (currently via frontage road) and through access. A Reconnaissance Study is a planning study with no commitment to construction, and to date DOT has not initiated a design start to advance any of the concepts presented in the study.

Q: How much will the project cost to construct?

A: Stage 2: Peger Road to Hoselton Road is expected to be between $5 million and $10 million.

Q: Will there be changes to the traffic patterns during construction?

A: We are working hard to isolate work segments and develop construction phasing that minimizes the duration of construction and maintains sufficient level of service in the corridor. We are partnering with the City of Fairbanks to permit our construction contractor to work at night to take advantage of lower traffic volumes, which will greatly reduce the overall impact of the construction on the traveling public and surrounding businesses.
