Haines Klehini River Bridge Replacement Project #69377

Picture of Existing Klehini Bridge

Project Description

The Alaska Department of Transportation & Public Facilities (DOT&PF) on behalf of the Federal Highway Administration proposes to replace the Klehini River Bridge. The project is north of Haines on Porcupine Road near Haines Highway milepost 26.

Purpose & Need
The existing steel truss bridge currently does not meet bridge standards. Additionally, the existing structure has vertical height restrictions and is limited to single lane traffic due to its width of about 17 feet.
The proposed bridge would have two 10-ft lanes with 5-ft shoulders on both sides and would be able to accommodate the public access needs as well as agricultural, logging, mining, construction and recreational vehicles that need to cross the river. The proposed bridge is a modern concrete bridge with no truss superstructure, thereby eliminating height restrictions.

The Proposed Action would

  • Construct a two-lane multi-span concrete bridge across the Klehini River downstream to the existing bridge
  • Remove and dispose of the existing bridge
  • Dredge, excavate and fill in the Klehini River to install 2 in-water piers and place riprap for abutment protection
  • Realign bridge approaches on Porcupine Road to accommodate new bridge approaches
  • Replace existing and install new drainage culverts
  • Reconstruct a portion of Chilkat Lake Road
  • Transfer operation and maintenance of new bridge and Porcupine Road to Haines Borough
  • revegetate sections of currently occupied roadway that would be abandoned.

  • Replace bridge and roadway signage & striping

The existing bridge is scheduled for replacement in 2016
