Northern Air Cargo Leases Space for Charter Passenger Terminal

(Anchorage, Alaska) – Ted Stevens Anchorage International Airport (ANC) is pleased to announce that Northern Air Cargo (NAC) has entered in to a lease agreement with ANC for aeronautical use of space at the former Kulis Air National Guard base, located at 5005 Raspberry Road. This is the first air operator to make use of the opportunity to lease the space.

Northern Aviation Services, a division of NAC, has reconfigured the building that once served as the mess hall and kitchen, transforming it into a first class charter terminal for the use of their client, Shell Alaska Exploration. The facility will be supporting transportation of Shell’s employees and contractors during the summer offshore exploration season. NAC has also chartered a Boeing 737-400 passenger aircraft from Miami Air which will be based at Kulis as well.

“Northern Air Cargo has done a fantastic job turning the former mess hall into a first class charter passenger terminal, and we are delighted that the Airport has been able to assist and support this project,” stated Steve Hatter, Deputy Commissioner of Aviation for the State of Alaska.

“We’re very fortunate that the airport has this type of facility available to meet the needs of the aviation industry and that of our expanding customer base. We believe the transfer of Kulis to the state, and subsequent availability to private sector will facilitate new growth at the Anchorage Airport,” said David Karp, NAC’s President and Chief Executive Officer.

The former Kulis Air National Guard base is located on 129 acres of property owned by the State of Alaska. The Air National Guard operated Kulis on the site from the 1950’s until February, 2011, when the Air National Guard’s operations were relocated to Joint Base Elmendorf-Richardson (JBER) as part of a Base Realignment and Closure action.

The State of Alaska received the property in October, 2011, and has been preparing it for lease over the last eight months. “It’s a great location with tremendous potential,” said Katie Gage, Land Manager for ANC. “However, there were a number of older facilities and structures that needed to be demolished, as they had little value or purpose on a commercial service airport.”

Approximately 230,000 square feet of building space remains available for lease. This includes three C130 hangars, four office buildings, and a large warehouse. Existing improvements also include approximately 15 acres of aircraft parking apron and three acres of vehicle parking lots. The State is working with the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) to designate approximately half of the land as non-aeronautical to improve the leasing potential of four office-type buildings on uplands near Raspberry Road.

The Alaska Department of Transportation and Public Facilities (ADOT&PF) oversees 254 airports, 11 ferries serving 35 communities, 5,700 miles of highway and 660 public facilities throughout the state of Alaska. The mission of ADOT&PF is to “Get Alaska Moving through service and infrastructure.”
