Specialized Teams
Investigations
The Airport Police and Fire Department is responsible for investigating criminal cases while working to apprehend, charge and convict individuals that commit serious offenses at Ted Stevens Anchorage International Airport or its surrounding property. The department has one full time investigator appointed for a term of service determined by the Chief. The investigator performs follow up on cases, serves as a liaison between the District Attorney's office and other state, local and foreign agencies.
Airport Police & Fire officers investigate their own cases, with assistance from the department investigator and other shifts as needed. The department uses a problem oriented policing philosophy, encouraging each case officer to solve crimes and find solutions for community problems when possible.
Explosive Ordnance Disposal
The Explosive Ordnance Disposal team, or bomb squad, is responsible for protecting Anchorage by rendering safe explosive devices using highly trained, well-equipped technicians and the most current techniques available. The Anchorage Bomb Squad is compiled of Airport Police and Fire Officers, Anchorage Police Department and the FBI. The team responds to both local and statewide bomb threats. All bomb squad members complete a 6-week training program at the FBI's Hazardous Device School in Alabama.
Bike Patrol
The Bike Patrol team is an essential part of the Airport Police and Fire Department. Patrolling the Airport on bicycles allows for more effective and efficient public safety for Ted Stevens Anchorage International Airport and its surrounding property. Bike Patrol is able to access more area than an officer on foot and areas inaccessible to a patrol car. Primarily, Bike Patrol covers the parking lots, bike paths, lakes and around terminal buildings.
K-9
Ted Stevens Anchorage International Airport K-9 team is made up of three officer/K-9 teams that are trained to detect explosive devices. The department participates in the TSA National Explosives Detection Canine Team Program and maintains certification standards annually.
Officer/K-9 teams participate in a 10-week training program at Lackland Air Force Base in Texas. Upon completion, teams return to Anchorage for further acclimation and training at the Airport. Even though teams are under the Airport's jurisdiction, they can be called on to assist with other state, local and federal agencies when necessary.
Drug Interdiction
In 1995, the Ted Stevens Anchorage International Airport reinstated the Drug Interdiction team in order to prevent the importing and distribution of illegal drugs into and around Alaska. The Drug Interdiction team is composed of Airport Police and Fire officers, the DEA, Alaska State Troopers, and the Alaska Army National Guard. The team is responsible for drug trafficking investigations at various ports of entry in Alaska, including Ted Stevens Anchorage International Airport.
Ice Rescue
Due to its location, Ted Stevens Anchorage International Airport is responsible for emergency rescue services at neighboring bodies of water such as Lake Hood and Cook Inlet. The Ice Rescue team is trained to rescue victims that are at risk for, or those that have already fallen through thin ice. Although the main jurisdiction is the Airport, the Ice Rescue team is prepared to assist the Municipality of Anchorage when needed.
Hovercraft Rescue
Similar to the Ice Rescue Team, the Hovercraft Rescue team also provides rescue services for Ted Stevens Anchorage International Airport at Lake Hood, Lake Spenard and Cook Inlet. The Hovercraft Team is responsible for rescuing people that have become submerged in bodies of water.
